Some years ago, as I sat and watched my thoughts, they seemed like a fast moving freight train. I eventually began to notice the spaces between the train "cars," the spaces between thoughts.
As I continued in this daily practice of just sitting and watching my thoughts (in the pre-dawn hours before my busy life), the space between thoughts became more clearly discernible. My awareness dwelled there rather than being carried away by the train.
I began to see that each thought arose independently. The "cars" were not connected to each other. Neither was there a "track" on which they ran. No track except what I created -- some part of me insisting I keep track. (Lest I disappear, I suppose.)
Ordinary mind is carried away by the train of thought. Identifies with (becomes identical to) the thought train. Awareness mind is simply here. No train exists. Thoughts arise. Disappear. No track except what is purposely created.
Thoughts bubble up (from somewhere -- a mystery) one at a time. Ordinary mind automatically merges these discrete and separate thoughts, creates mega thoughts ("how could they do this to me," etc.), creates monstrous and fantastic stories, sits there wearing its virtual reality helmet and gooning itself to stressful death.
Awareness mind simply notices. Does not try to stitch thoughts into a story. Awareness mind opens further -- smells smells, tastes tastes, hears sounds, thinks thinkings, feels feelings -- all the while releasing, letting go, ever opening fresh and anew.
Paradoxically, awareness mind can out think ordinary mind. Ordinary mind is stuck on a track. Awareness mind has no bounds. The boundless runs circles around the bound.

Interesting post. Is there such a division or distinction, or are you just training the mind not to think useless thoughts and identify with them? You are bringing order to your mind. The orderly, quiet mind is more dynamic since it isn't wasting its energies spewing out disorderly endless thoughts. Your awareness mind being boundless in other words.

ReplyDeleteWhat can be ordered in the space between train cars?

The order isn't the space. The order is what comes from that space, the thoughts that arise from that space. This is what George and other spiritual masters are pointing out. But ultimately, all spiritual masters are the same spiritual master, the same spiritual entity.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the train cars are products of ego and the spaces represent unity. LG
