Though we may look substantial, we are aswirl -- swirlings of thought, of emotion, of the interplay of relationships. Even the part our scientific age considers most substantial (substance - ial), most solid, the body, is aswirl. At any given moment, about one-fourth of the cells of the body are emerging, being born; about one-fourth are dying; the rest are middle-aging.
The thought came to me this morning that if we had photos taken of ourselves, one each week since birth, that would be 52 photos in a year. Let's say we live 80 years, more or less. That would be 4160 photos. If you combined those into a movie and allowed each photo one second (which is quite slow to the human eye), the movie of you would be about 4200 seconds long or 70 minutes. Just enough time to consume a bucket of popcorn, some milk duds, and a large coke, and probably wouldn't even need to take a pee break.

I'll bring the popcorn - count me in!
ReplyDeleteSomebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now! There are only so many tomorrows.
