raison d'etre

Let us talk about God. To do so we need to define our term. Who or What is God? (I use capital letters to indicate that I am referring to the Ultimate of the Ultimate, rather than some viceroy, diplomat, or other representing agency.) Some say Creator. Some say Source. We could say Creator Source.

Now let us shift to our precarious position on this planet -- a position which we ourselves have created and continue to create (while watching Fox News and reading Huffington Post and blaming THEM for all OUR troubles). We have all done this to ourselves. Everyone is both a culprit and a potential hero/ine.

Back to God. The Creator Source.

If most of the troubles in the world are due to inequality and injustice (concerning food, water, lifestyle, energy, power), then how is it the Creator Source allows this? The age-old question: is the CS unaware, uncaring, allowing an experiment to run its course?

If most of the troubles in the world are due to the dullness of human consciousness, the restriction of thought and awareness, then how is it that the Creator Source puts up with this? Are we a planet of the Awareness Disabled? If so, who are the staff of this large Group Home?

If most of the troubles in this world are illusions and we are simply passing through, serving our time until individual bailout, then how is it that the Creator Source allows or produces such a bus stop, such a waiting room?

If most of the troubles in the world are due to everyone not adopting my worldview, my religion, my political stance, then how is it that the CS did not give me or you the eloquence and charisma to explain how this is so and persuade everyone that this is the right way to go?

And so on.

Some say we should just forget about the Creator Source, the Wellspring. I don't think so. How can a river forget the rain? A bird forget the sky? How can the bubbling forget the spring? The heat forget the fire? Besides we have tried that, it's called materialism -- only matter matters. It not only has not worked -- we have dug ourselves into a hole.

I am not necessarily expecting answers to the above questions. The way a question is phrased locks us in to one particular set of answers and no others. And I know there is a christian explanation, a buddhist explanation, a judaic explanation, an islam explanation, a taoist explanation, a hindu explanation, a science explanation, an atheist explanation, a wiccan explanation, a pagan explanation, a capitalist explanation, a world-weary hand-to-brow explanation, a goth explanation, a diagnostic and statistical manual explanation, a hedonistic explanation, a there-is-no-explaining explanation, an advaita explanation, a perennial philosophy explanation, and on and on.

Maybe we need a larger question -- which is also smaller in its focus.

What on earth are you here for? What on earth are you here for? What on earth are you here for? What on earth are you here for?

  1. Open to another metaperspective?

In the AA community there is a catch phrase: "Let Go and Let God." Consider taking this one step further: "Let Go of God." Now that involves some heavy-duty letting go!

Contemplate this: "What exists beyond 'God?'" Could the answer be as simple as, "Everything?" Is not "God" the last bastion of conceptualization?

Of the wondrous humans I know, a precious few equate "God" with that which is beyond conception. And for those who do, why do they need a word for the wordless? Many use the capitalized term to stop the search - to shut down the extraordinary sensitivity required to open to that which is beyond conception or conceiving. "One hand clapping" gives many a headache.

That which IS, requires no conception.

    Nothing created, nothing creating.

    No source, no result.

No Being doing, no Doer being.

    ALL BEING.

Rain and River knowing each other as ONE.

When I let go of "God" a great ONENESS appears!

  2. Stan, Yes! I perceive we see similarly. I do like to prattle on about the Ultimate however. And to indulge as I do requires language, English in my case. So I speak of the Wellspring, That-Which-Breathes-Us, and so on, knowing that the word "God" is fraught with difficulty and burdened with peculiarity. Meister Eckhart spoke of the Godhead (that gives birth to God) when confronted with this conundrum -- the Godhead being the great mystery, that beyond language (and he got into all kinds of trouble).

There is a knowing that occurs outside of language. My fault and downfall is my ongoing attempt to language-fy it. If I were truly wise, I would say nothing.

But being the bozo that I am, I keep on yakking. Idiot fool! Maybe someday I will see the light.

Of course, as you well know, this negates nothing you said. You express a truth of the matter very well, very well indeed.

Thank you for you, Dear Brother Man!
