Christianity has done well in helping the self recognize the Self. It has not done well, however, in its insistence on the Self being "out there," an Object to be worshiped and appeased, to the neglect of the Self being "in here," acting through our very being.
Of course, the danger of the self knowing that the self and the Self are one is inflation, floating around as if one is a holy being, donning an esoteric demeanor (sometimes with a costume), and seeking converts. At that point, the self is no longer one with the Self.
Humility is required. None of that fake humility either. Humility and humus are related words and concepts. Humility means to recognize that one is dirt. We are the Self (this is what Jesus meant when he said "You are gods"), but we are the Self that shits. All "saints" have to wipe their butts.
The beauty and great treasure of knowing that the self and Self are one is confident fearlessness. One is at home in the universe. The Self knows what to do at and in each moment's unfolding. A higher, deeper, wider Wisdom is at work. Trusting this Wisdom is true faith.

i guess I should leave out the "shit" part. Folk have a hard enough time comprehending and balancing out the self-Self relationship. Holy humus, god-man!
