torture
Why would it be that more frequent church attenders are more likely to approve of torture? Aren't they supposed to be all loving? Could this torture approval be linked to my research findings back in the late 60's showing frequent church attenders to be less likely to have transcendent experiences? Is frequent church attendance an indicant of grammar school spirituality, with those who attend church less or not at all having graduated and moved on? Are churches training grounds for intolerance and fear, and/or do they simply attract folk who are intolerant and fearful? Is the worship of an old testament god full of paranoia, suspicion, and jealousy somehow involved? Does wearing an instrument of torture on a neck chain and making it your major icon have an influence? What in heaven's name is going on?

Brother George,
ReplyDeleteAs I have come to learn, your blogs give rise to thoughts I have not or at best loosely considered here-to-fore (thank you).
At one or more periods of my life, and depending upon the Sheppard of the flock at the time, I have found attending church to be torturous. I have also noticed that the hand of fellowship is frequently extended more toward the hip pocket than the heart. It also strikes me that one might resist torture (metaphorically) by simple ignorance of his cosmic surroundings or ignoring his earthly ones.
Wonder if these observations might lead me down a hot trail rather than a cool golden path.
Brother Dick
p.s.
Your post was at 4:03 AM. You having trouble sleeping in you advanced years:)
Dick, I think your path is a cool golden one. I am appreciative that you read my blog postings. As to sleep, I made a vow to the Muse that I would get up when I wake up. She speaks to me mostly in the early a.m. while others are unconscious. Love to you, my brother. George
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. I think because they worship a god that punishes...so then they do too.
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered the same thing, George. All I know is that I see things differently after having traveled different spiritual paths. "Grade school" religion makes sense to me as an explanation. I don't say that as judgement, only as observation of my own path. Love & blessings, Eve
