a simple truth with wide and deep effects

To receive a gift,
one must be receptive.

  1. So true.

I know your readers likely have heard this "joke," but it came to mind when I read your post ...

Flooding struck a town and an old man climbed onto his roof. As the water continued to rise, he prayed to God to save him.

Soon a man in an inner tube swam near the house. "Climb on, there's room," he yelled to the man on the roof.

"Nope, you go on," the old man said. "God's going to take care of me."

The man with the inner tube swam away as the water rose still higher.

Pretty soon some of the old man's neighbors paddled by in a rowboat and encouraged him to climb aboard. "Nope, God is going to save me," he told them.

A while later the old man was standing on the ridge of the roof, the floodwaters lapping at his feet, when a helicopter flew overhead. A man yelled for the old man to grab the rope and hold on, but the old man waved the helicopter away as he shouted something about God saving him.

The water rose higher and the old man had nowhere else to go, so he drowned.

At the pearly gates the old man saw God. "Hey, God, I prayed and prayed, but you still let me drown! What gives?"

"What do you mean," God thundered back. "I sent you an inner tube and a rowboat and even a helicopter! What more was I supposed to do?"

  2. (Laughing) -- that story illustrates the point quite well.
