Well, there that question is again, a question that just makes me break out laughing."How can God allow evil?" It is obvious that anyone who asks that question has painted God into a corner -- a corner of the wholly good. That's a pretty arrogant thing to do. We have "God" over here in this corner and "evil" running around loose.
My take on it is that we don't know who God is, God is a Mystery, but we have a bunch of ideas about him/her/it. (Many folk say him because most of the major religions on earth are patriarchal in nature and require that God be male.) Most religions say we are not supposed to create false images of God. In my view, any image of God is a false image.
So we set ourselves up with the God-evil question, then put a lot of preachers and theologians and philosophers and assorted other hand-wringers into business.
It's hilarious what we do to ourselves.

Kathy, yes there are despicable acts. What I am pointing to in this post is the human propensity to ask questions that have no clearly resolvable answers. The question itself is a setup -- which indicates there is something not right about the question -- like "when did you stop beating your wife?"
ReplyDelete"How can God allow evil?" is one of those kind of questions. My focus is not on whether or not evil exists. It is on the hilarious (at least to me) situations into which we put ourselves -- entire departments of philosophy, theology, etc. -- books printed -- reputations made and lost -- earnest sermons preached by earnest men and women -- and so on simply by asking a strange (and to my way of thinking) faulty question.
See what's happening? Even now I am yakking about that question when I could be eating a banana sandwich or taking a walk. I dunno. It seems mighty funny to me.
:>)
:-D yeah i understand what you mean.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response. :) i just found out that those two stars are Venus and Jupiter. *Planets* ..one of them is amazingly huge. The corn man just came by honking his corn...i ran out to buy a couple to go with my fried catfish dinner (corn on sticks, with butter cheese and hot chili)...and then looked up in the sky and saw that one huge planet.
