I notice that humans are always killing each other in favor of a Larger Cause. Those folk in Mumbai right now are hypnotized by a Larger Cause and to them gunning people down means little or nothing. It's for a Larger Cause.
Our invasion of Iraq and the massive number of civilian deaths there (600,000 as of June, 2006 according to Lancet, the medical journal) are deemed acceptable because it is in favor of a Larger Cause.
A trouble is that my Larger Cause may not be your Larger Cause. What keeps everyone going is that each believes their Larger Cause is the Largest Cause of All and that if everyone just accepted their Larger Cause as the Largest Cause, all would live in peace.
We humans once believed that the sun revolved around the earth. We were geocentric. [Now we see that the earth revolves around the sun and that the sun is only one of an immense number (400 billion or so) of suns in "our" galaxy, and that this galaxy is only one of 130 billion galaxies in "our" universe. Who knows what is beyond that? Or how many universes are parallel to us right now, unseen, undetected.]
We may not be geocentric now, but we are definitely Larger-Cause-O-Centric. For some of us our LC consists only of ourselves, no matter how much we try to mask it. For others, the LC is our neighborhood, or our community, or our nation, or our way of life, or our planet, or making money, or having as much pleasure as possible, or our religion, or simply staying alive.
I am a fool. I live in and believe in a cosmocracy. I see the entire human peculiarity as an integral part of the cosmos. I openly admit my Larger Cause. And it does not require my blowing you away with an AK-47 or nuking you for my LC to occur. Quite the opposite. It requires us understanding each other. Very foolish on my part because mutual understanding for some reason is very difficult. Some say unattainable. Genocide or theocide or Cause-o-cide are seen as much easier.
Now it is easy to project all this "out there" and shake our heads and go tsk-tsk. It is more difficult to see it within oneself. Every time I ridicule or reject or think ill against anyone, I am an assassin in favor of my Larger Cause.

And by such
Is not such a fool!
Littlegeezer
Force life under a veil because a book says,
ReplyDeleteHate that which you are afraid of
And blame it on religion,
Or environmentalism, feminism, liberalism, conservatism
Dogmatism
And ridicule those that disagree
Sacred punishment, sacred anger, sacred hatred, sacred war
Blood rising, fists in the air
A target, any target -THANK YOU GOD!
Ahh, the seductiveness of righteousness
I love the idea of nuance
But it just isn’t flavored right
Doesn’t titillate, stimulate, warm the heart,
just feels wobbly and confused.
a floating bridge,
un-negotiable, intangible, empty
harmony? no please,
just give me a bulls-eye.
And please quit asking me to think.
Mutual understanding is hard because it feels so damn good to think you are right...but it sure has a bad hangover. Tania
